If you live in California, you may have noticed that our products include a sticker with a “Prop 65” warning. We want to take a moment to explain what Proposition 65 is, how it came about, and how it applies to our products.
California’s Proposition 65 is a statewide initiative passed in 1986 known as The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, designed to address public concern about exposure to toxic chemicals. Proposition 65 required that a list of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm be published by the Governor of California, along with certain controls over the listed chemicals, and is intended to allow California's consumers to make informed choices about the products they purchase. Boy does that sound scary! But the reality is that there are naturally occurring heavy metals in the ground that you walk on and plant your vegetable garden in, and minute amounts of those metals are absorbed by all plants as they grow in the soil.
Fast forward to today, this proposition requires us to provide a “clear and reasonable” warning before exposing anyone to a listed chemical (even when found naturally in the ground). Some things were excluded from this warning if they have an “industry standard”(such as your fruits and vegetables you buy in your grocery store!), but other product groups (such as dietary supplements)that do not have an industry standard are required to include this warning – which includes our products. This warning label is exclusive to California, so products sold outside of California will likely not include this warning.
While this warning sounds scary, we want to reassure you regarding our Quality Control Standards. Every batch of Bamboo Pharmacy pills and tablets is tested for heavy metals. As there are presently no State or Federal heavy metal guidelines defined for herbal supplements, we are required to include the warning on everything, regardless of how small the amount of that metal is in the product. Our efforts in achieving sustainable farming methods with our growers, reviewing data and research on soil pollution, and our choices for sourcing clean herbs has allowed us to continue reducing our heavy metal limits for our Bamboo Pharmacy brand of products. And we commit to you that we will continue to only use the highest standards for our herb sourcing in the future.
